Ask a Curator Hour

Free with paid admission to the museum

In 2025, the BCHA is suspending our temporary exhibit schedule to undertake our largest project to date: the review of our collections and archives.  With tens of thousands of pieces to be reviewed, our temporary exhibit space inside the Sheriff’s Residence is being converted into a workshop for Curator John Moga and our team of volunteers.

This working lab will be viewable by guests when they visit the Sheriff’s Residence throughout 2025.  Staff may be available to chat with visitors about our work, but this many not always be possible.  Therefore, we are introducing Ask a Curator Hour each month so John or Rhiannon can take your questions about our collections, the work we’re doing, or even how you can preserve your own history at home!  Stop by any time between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the 4th Saturday of the month (unless closed for a holiday) to see what we’re doing to keep your history safe!

BCHArt Camp: Symbols of Michigan

Workshops: March 31 – April 4 at 1:00 p.m. each day (see schedule below)

Reception: April 5, 2025, time and location TBA

Cost: Free, registration required (opens February 28)

The BCHA is launching its first ever teen-only camp!  Teenagers 13 to 18 are invited to join us during spring break 2025 as we use art to explore the official state symbols of Michigan!  During each workshop, budding artists will learn about the hows and the whys of picking state symbols while painting a symbol chosen for that day.  Included in the admission fee is all art material, instruction, the talk, and a snack bar for them to enjoy!

Unlike most canvas and snack events, students will not take their painting home with them right away.  Instead all art will be put on display for a special one-night-only reception.  Friends, family, and the public are invited to enjoy the skills of Berrien County’s teens and learn a bit about what makes Michigan. . . Michigan!  This event is free to the public and the location will be announced shortly.

Each workshop will be held at a different library and due to limited space, there is a limit of one workshop per attendee to ensure everyone has a chance to join us!

Free with paid admission to the museum

Enhance your visit to the museum by enjoying our Story Trails!  While the stories can be enjoyed by every visitor, these trails are designed for young history lovers in mind.

Our first book of the season is “The Curious Polka-Dot Present” by local children’s author Cheri Hallwood. A little girl receives a special birthday gift from her grandmother and goes on a journey to discover what’s inside the package. Follow along with her as she learns just how much grandma loves her granddaughter!  This story trail will run from May 1st through July 13th and will be available in all four buildings. All trails are free with paid admission and are aimed at children 12 years and younger. Copies of the book will be available for sale in the gift shop.

Our second trail of the season focuses on two middle-reader books, “Bold Boys in Michigan History” and “Great Girls in Michigan History.” Sixteen excerpts from the books will showcase the men and women who helped to make the Mitten state a powerhouse. Discover how Simon Pokagon’s used the power of the pen to keep the history and culture of the Potawatomi alive or the ways the English-born, Michigan-raised Anna Howard Shaw fought for women’s suffrage. This story trail will run from July 16th through September 28th and will be available in all four buildings. All trails are free with paid admission and these stories are designed for children 8 years and older.
